Act I Scene I
This scene takes place in Verona, Italy, on a public street. Gregory and Sampson, who are part of the Montague household, are looking for some trouble. Abram and Baltizar, part of the Capulet household are there also. Due to fact that the Capulet’s and Montague’s are enemies, they start fighting. The prince comes out and interrupts the fight. He warns them if they keep fighting they will be persecuted. Romeo, the son of Montague, cannot be found. Montague ask Benvolio what is wrong with Romeo. Benvolio tells him Romeo is in love; but the woman (Rosaline) he loves does not love him nor has a desire to get married, which is making him depressed. Benvolio advises Romeo to forget about Rosaline and check out other girls.
Act I Scene II
It is a Sunday afternoon. In this scene Paris ask Capulet to if he could marry his daughter Juliet. Capulet doesn’t think she is ready for marriage, so Capulet says he could date her. Capulet decides to have a feast and gives invitations to a servant to give to the guest, but the servant can’t read. The servant stops Romeo and Benvolio if they could read the letters for him. In gratitude of them helping him he tells them they could go to the party. Benvolio convinces Romeo to go to the party to look for girls to cheer him up.
Act I Scene III
Lady Capulet is at home talking to Juliet before the party. She is trying to convince Juliet to like Paris, but Juliet is not interested in being married. Lady Capulet makes a agreement with Juliet to go to the party and meet Paris then decide if she likes him or not. Juliet wants to be in in love with her husband, but agrees and goes to get ready for the party.
Act I Scene IV
Romeo, Benvolio, and their friend Mercutio are heading to the party. Romeo is still sad about Rosalin who he is in love with. He wonders how they will get because they are Montagues. Mercutio starts talking about his weird dream, but is not making any since. They put on masks and go to the party but have agreed to stay for only one dance. The scene ends with Romeo talking about something bad happening.
Act I Scene V
Later on at the party Romeo and Juliet see each other and immediately fall in love. Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin and opponent to Romeo, recognizes Romeo’s voice and is very upset that he is there. He asks Capulet if he could kill Romeo, but Capulet says no. Meanwhile Romeo and Juliet kiss and figure out their families are rivals. Juliet has the idea that they should get married and Romeo agrees.
Act II Scene I
After the party Romeo decides he does not want to leave his beloved Juliet. To avoid being found he hides in the orchard. Benvolio and Mercutio are looking for Romeo but cannot find him. They give up looking for him because they are tired, so they leave and go home without Romeo. Act II Scene II
Romeo goes to Juliet’s balcony to see her. She is upset that he is a Montague and she is a Capulet. Romeo tells her he would change his name so they would be together. Juliet ask Romeo if they could get married. He thinks that it is a good idea. He tells her he would send her word about the wedding arrangements at nine o’ clock.
Act II Scene III
Romeo goes to see Friar Lawrence’ cell to make arrangements for the wedding. Friar is working on his herbs he is growing. Romeo tells the Friar of his plans to marry Juliet. The Friar is confused because just yesterday he loved another girl. Romeo convinces Friar he loves Juliet, and he agrees to marry them. He hopes marrying them will help their family’s to get along better.
Act II Scene IV
Tybalt sends a letter to Romeo telling him he wants to fight him. Romeo is talking with Benvolio and Mercutio when Juliet’s nurse comes up and ask to speak to Romeo in private. The nurse warns him not to play with Juliet’s heart, and she has others who love her and want to be her husband. Romeo tell the nurse to tell Juliet to go to the Friar’s cell so they could get married.
Act II Scene V
Juliet is waiting impatiently for the nurse to come back with the news. The nurse finally comes but claims she is too out of breath to tell Juliet the news. Finally the nurse gives in and tells Juliet that Romeo is at the Friar’s cell and is waiting for her so they could be married. Meanwhile the nurse goes to look for a ladder so Romeo can climb up to Juliet’s bed chamber to complete their marriage.
Act II Scene VI
Romeo and Friar L. are talking while waiting for Juliet. Romeo is talking about his love for her. Then Juliet comes in and the Friar ask her if she definitely want to marry Romeo, she says yes. Friar marries them.
Act III Scene I
Benvolio and Mercutio are in town looking for some Capulets to fight. Tybalt comes up looking for Romeo, but he isn’t with them. Tybalt picks a fight with Mercutio, and they start fighting. Romeo comes up and sees them fighting, he steps in between them and Tybalt stabs Mercutio. Because of this Romeo starts fighting Tybalt. In the fight Romeo kills Tybalt. The citizens don’t like them fighting and tell the prince. The prince comes out and sees them fighting. He sees Tybalt dead and ask who killed him. Romeo tells the prince he killed him, and the prince exiles him from Verona.
Act III Scene II
Juliet is with the nurse who is mourning a death. Juliet does not know who is dead and at first thinks its Romeo. The nurse finally tells Juliet that her cousin Tybalt is dead not Romeo, but Romeo has been banished because he killed Tybalt. Juliet starts crying but not for Tybalt, for Romeo. The nurse tells Juliet she knows where Romeo is hiding, in Friar L. cell. Juliet gives a ring to the nurse and tells her to take it to Romeo, and ask him to come say goodbye to her. Juliet gives a ring to the nurse and asks her to take it to him and for him to come tell her goodbye.
Act III Scene III
Romeo is in the Friar’s cell. They are talking about his banishment, Romeo is saying it is worse than death because he cannot see Juliet. The nurse comes and knocks on the door to the cell. She tells Romeo of Juliet’s grief. Romeo grabs a knife and says he wants to kill himself but is stopped by the nurse. The nurse gives Romeo the ring from Juliet and ask him to go see her.
Act III Scene IV
Paris is at the Capulet’s house and they are explaining that with everything going on he and his wife have not had the time to talk to Juliet about getting married to Paris. However, they can be married on Thursday. But it is too late tonight to see Juliet with everything that is going on. Capulet tells his wife to go to Juliet before she goes to bed and talk to her about being married to Paris.
Act III Scene V
Romeo and Juliet are on the balcony and Romeo is leaving for his banishment. The nurse enters to warn Juliet that her mother is coming. They talk about cousin Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s involvement, and banishment to Mantua. Juliet’s mother tells her of her father’s arrangement for her to be married in two days, but she refuses. Her father then tells her that he will disown her if she does not obey. Juliet’s nurse advises her to obey her father despite the fact that she is already married. But Juliet wants to go to Friar L for advice.
Act IV Scene I
Paris has gone to see Friar L to ask him to marry him and Juliet. Juliet enters to see Friar. Paris tells her of his love for her and is excited about their marriage. Friar L. does not want them to rush into marriage. Paris ask Juliet to tell the Friar that she loves him. Paris then leaves. Friar L suggest that she fakes her death by taking a liquid to make her appear dead. He also says he will send a messenger to Mantua with letters to explain to Romeo.
Act IV Scene II
Juliet returns home and asks her father for forgiveness. He is very excited for the wedding and decides to move the wedding day up to Wednesday. Capulet sends for Paris to advise him. Juliet asks her nurse to go with her to get ready for the wedding.
Act IV Scene III
Nurse is helping Juliet choose things for the wedding, she asks the nurse to leave her to her prayers, but her mother enters to check on Juliet. Then she and the nurse leave. Juliet wonders about the things that could go wrong like, if Friar L would give her a potion to really kill her, or maybe she would be buried before she would wake up and suffocate in a tomb. She takes the chance and drinks it anyways.
Act IV Scene IV
All in the Capulet house are joyful. The wedding preparations are being finished up, but not quite yet done. Paris arrives, but Juliet is not awake yet. They send the nurse to wake her.
Act IV Scene V
The nurse goes and tries to wake up Juliet but she wont wake. The nurse thinks she’s dead. Juliet’s mother comes in and asks what the matter is and is screaming for help. Capulet comes in and says that Paris is there to bring Juliet out. He discovers Juliet is dead and everyone is crying and upset. The musicians are sent away because the wedding has turned into a funeral.
Act V Scene I
Romeo is talking to Balthasar about a dream, then tells Romeo he brings him news that Juliet is dead. Romeo asks for letters from the friar, but there are none. Romeo goes to buy a container of poison to take to Juliet’s grave and drink it.
Act V Scene II
A quarantine has prevented Friar John from delivering Friar L’s message about Juliet’s temporary death. Friar L needs a crowbar to get Juliet out. He knows that she will be upset that Romeo wasn’t informed about the details. He plans to keep her in his cell until another letter can be delivered.
Act V Scene III
Paris is strewing flowers around Juliet’s grave when Romeo and Balthasar come up. Paris and his page hide. Romeo opens the tomb and goes inside. Paris tries to catch Romeo, but they get in a fight and Paris gets wounded, before he dies he asks Romeo to put him in the grave with Juliet. Romeo does. Romeo kisses Juliet, takes the poison and dies beside her. Then Friar L arrives and finds the bodies of Romeo and Paris. Juliet wakes up sees the bodies and decides to stay in the tomb. After trying to get Juliet to leave, the Friar leaves. Hearing the night watchman coming, Juliet stabs herself with Romeo’s dagger. Romeo’s mom has already died because of his exile. Capulet realizes that the family feud has caused all these deaths and asks for Montague’s hand. Montague offers to make a gold statue in tribute to Juliet to resolve their differences.
